Watching a video beats reading a manual

Post Image - Watching a video beats reading a manual

When people got serious about learning how to use their business phone systems....when they believed that with a little education they could save money on service calls and get things done faster.....they dug into the manuals that came with the system. They either came with several books, perhaps even a binder, or if it was really advanced you could get something on a floppy disc...remember those?

Documentation has gotten better since those days, and this is both good and bad. It's good because with some education you can take care of the day to day operation of your system. It's not so good because systems today do SO many things that the documentation is overwhelming. You really need to have manufacturer training, like out technicians do, in order to work on the system.

Can't I just read the manual?

Today, system manuals come on a DVD or perhaps online. The indexes are clickable and searchable and you can find whatever you need. And the problem.

When it was paper, I think much more care and attention went into the content. It needed to be concise or it cost more to print. The manuals were edited relentlessly to make sure they provided what was needed an no more then that.

Now, since it's on a DVD or online, the manuals have bloomed to thousands of 'pages' of information, all thrown in under the guise of helping.  You used to be able to browse through a book and find what you needed.  It took a while, but if you didn't really know what you were searching for you could usually get close and zero in on it.

Now, unless you know the right term to search for you're faced with scanning page after page after page, literally thousands of them, hoping for some hint about what you need.

So what am I supposed to do?

We felt the best approach was to create a library of videos showing how to perform the everyday tasks we know our customers need to know how to do. It was a fair bit of work to set up and implement, but it's been the most popular thing we've done. Feedback has been amazing.

Now you can watch a short video that shows you step by step how to do the task you are trying to perform

You can stop and rewind if needed while you take notes, and you can watch it as many times as you need any time that makes sense to you.

We offer these videos at no charge as a service to our customers and to businesses outside our normal serving area.

If after watching the video you are still not able to perform the task you are trying to do, you can give us a call at 403-543-6959 to arrange for remote support with one of our technicians. We'll talk you through how to do it and we bill in 15 minute increments. Much less expensive than an onsite service call. The best part is if we are unable to help you successfully complete your task, you don't pay.

So check them out. You can search for the system you have (Samsung OfficeServ of Nortel Norstar), and the task you are trying to perform. In today's fast paced world of information consumption they might be just what you need to get the most use from your system and avoid onsite service calls.
