Whether you are using VoIP online or have opted for a hosted VoIP provider it is cost effective (it is estimated you can save up to 80 percent) and makes remote connection and communication easy.

To benefit from VoIP services you need to understand some of the pitfalls related to it. Failing to do so can lead to increasing your expenses and not saving at all. Let’s take a look at some of the mistakes you should avoid while selecting a VoIP provider.

Failing to understand the technology

For small businesses it is not practical to have an in-house IT department. Hence, it is important that you understand at least the basic technology behind the VoIP system. This will help you use the system optimally and also avoid pitfalls that the VoIP provider might not have discussed with you.

Neglecting hidden charges

The upfront costs of VoIP services are definitely cheaper than traditional business phone systems, so it can be tempting. But make sure you read the fine print. For example, the service plan you have selected provides unlimited calling, but on reading the fine print it might state that it is limited to on network calls and not outside. Be wary of other hidden charges related to licensing, usage of certain features and the tech support provided by the service provider. If in doubt, ask for more detailed information/explanation.

Deciding on a provider without researching

The VoIP industry is currently on an upsurge. A number of new service providers have entered the market. If you select a provider that is a new entrant in the industry it might lead to headaches in the long-run. It is advisable to opt for a service provider with a proven track record in the industry, and one that has a number of satisfied customers you can possibly interact with.

Taking your internet connection into consideration

The effectiveness of the VoIP service is dependent on the type of internet connection you have in place. Make sure you discuss this with the service provider and find out if the VoIP system will perform optimally with the connection you currently have, or if you need to upgrade. Speak to other who are using VoIP and learn from their experiences as well.

Ignoring disaster recovery services

In case of a system failure will the service provider work promptly to restore the system? This is an important consideration before selecting a VoIP service provider. Time is the biggest asset in business and loss of time leads to loss of money.

Not knowing the features being offered to you

Schedule a demonstration to understand exactly what features the VoIP service provider is offering. Often basic services like call forwarding or voice mail are left out.

If you avoid these pitfalls, the VoIP service is likely to be an asset to your business in the days to come.
